The Dig

the art of the dig

not to be confused with digg.com but related however.

The Dig is a particularly Irish thing, firstly a definition;-

a dig is a comment or action that sends a message back to person or group of persons that communicates your disapproval in a subtle way.

It is almost joyful if the recipient interprets the Dig incorrectly since there will be a number of groups

those that understand The Art of the Dig

those can interpret the often unspoken message

those whom remain ignorant

Here is an example

In my enthusiasm at my first Hub I posted an announcement on digg.com, since the choices for categorisation were limited (or so it seems) I posted to Tech News

the post to Digg

In a remote corner of upstate New york a unilateral declaration by Irish poet Drax saw him secure the coveted title "Official Hub Poet". For those who don't know, Hubpages have built a set of tools so easy to use that within minutes visitors can publish their own articles and web pages, or as they call them, Hubs.

a person ? known as willynilly posted the following comment;

In a remote corner of his parents' house, someone using the handle "desdonnelly" posts an obscure story about an obscure person who is purportedly a big deal on an obscure Web site. And he marks it "tech industry news."

Spam? A pitiful detachment from reality? The only real question is what to mark this: spam, or lame?

I responded with these few kind words and thanks ..grin..

Well there was a clue in the title, Unofficially there's an Official Hub Poet, if you look at Hub pages and you will see that the title is chosen by the Hub creator and has no official status, hence unofficial.

If you had been following funding major investment houses instead of running about willynilly you would see that Hummer Winblad recently invested $2M in Hubpages. I suppose then if you were following development trends you would know why houses are investing in this type of company.

With regard to “tech industry news” alas Digg categorizations are not exactly as broad as users would like, perhaps you have seen the discussions and know the relative merits and demerits of further categorization.

I quite enjoy being an obscure person, I enjoy my anonymity. Poets are notoriously detached from reality, I’ll take that as a compliment, thanks

more sometime perhaps

There are multiple levels of Dig in this reply and I may elaborate ;-) in the meantime thank you for your continued support Hubbers.
