How Long does it Take to Write a Book

Well if it was an average novel it would come in and somewhere between 60,000 and 80,000 words. That is probably the easy determination, some authors turn out 5/6 books a year, some take 5 years to write one novel - like a runner how far can you write in one day.

Scenario A - suppose you're a new wunderkid mad to get at it and you slave away all the time, the story is bursting in your head and you cannot get it out quick enough. This should be good for somewhere between 1,500 and 2,500 words a day. So in somewhere to 4 to 8 weeks you will have your masterpiece on the table, ready for editing, proofing and all that.

Scenario B - you have money and can support yourself, your output is not fantastic but you can churn out 500 to 1,000 words a day, definitely 4,000 to 6,000 a week. Three months should see it on the table.

Scenario C - like many you have to work for some idiot in a dead end job to pay your rent and eat cheap while you work on your book. the best stuff always comes at 11.55 pm when you get up at 4am. You should be able to turn out a minimum of 3,000 a week so in 6 months you'll be done.

Some Tips

Set yourself a target, every day, every second day or every week - something that is achievable, keep the old writing muscle exercised.

Find a half dozen people who will feed you or encourage you no matter what.

Make a mantra... i'll write this book, I'll take the loot, i don't give a hoot... :-)

Very interesting! Was only able to read this time down to the video and watched the video. I've been taken once or twice too. Writee this review for free - it will be good experience for you. The ultimate frustration. You know so much about publishing -how so? I take it you are published?

I have written a novel, novella, and three full length children's books that have gotten nowhere. I don't know - maybe they are boring but I don't think so. Your comments if you can.

Hiya Donna, thanks for the comment, only published in a local anthology and in a few online journals, I've tended to focus on writing with the intention of getting to publishing eventually.. I am actively working towards setting up my own publishing house and plan to launch in Jan 2010...

Will it be self-publishing or a standard publishing company?

Sort of brain dead at the moment. Past my bed time. Will write in the morning. Are you experiencing the flooding at all?
